Case Study · Custom Reporting & Data Access

The reports the software never had.

A small business owner had no way to see sales by day, week, or month, by customer or staff member, or to track conversion rate over time. Oak City Labs reverse-engineered the underlying database and built the reports from scratch.

The challenge

The business ran its day-to-day operations on client-server software that couldn't answer basic questions about the business itself. There was no way to see sales broken down by day, week, or month, no way to compare performance by customer or staff member, and no way to track conversion rate over time. Those reports simply didn't exist. Building them wasn't straightforward either, since the software had no vendor API, no data export, and no documentation of how its underlying database was structured.

2

The solution

Oak City Labs reverse-engineered the software's own database, then used that map to build the reports the owner needed but never had.

A mapped, reverse-engineered database

With no vendor documentation or API to work from, Oak City Labs mapped the application's database table by table to understand exactly how it stored operational data.

A sales report that didn't exist before

Revenue can now be viewed by day, week, or month, and broken down by customer or staff member, none of which the original software could show.

A conversion rate report, on demand

A second new report tracks conversion rate, filterable by date range and by customer, giving the owner a number the software never surfaced.

3

The results

The owner can now see exactly which days, weeks, or months drive sales, and how customers and staff members compare, along with a conversion rate that can be sliced by date range or customer. None of it existed in the original software. Each report also renders in under two seconds, filters included, so an answer takes seconds instead of a request to a developer.
